Professional Golf Careers
When it comes to golf teachers, you must first think about how they became qualified to do so. First, there was their introduction to the game, perhaps as a kid, and then came many hours spent playing and practicing. Undoubtedly, these future golf teachers read all of the instruction material they could get their hands on, which, combined with their increasing playing prowess, gave them a solid understanding of swing mechanics and how to play the game to a high level.
Next came playing proficiency. A fully-certified golf teacher has to play to a certain standard for a number of reasons. It gives them an understanding into the swing and how to play the game that other golfers likely don't possess. It also lends credibility in the eyes of prospective students. Many students tend to gravitate towards golf teachers who play to a high level. While playing high-level golf, such as at a tour level, is not required to teach the game effectively, there are those students who will specifically seek out such individuals for instruction. Truthfully, though, anyone who can play to a reasonable standard can be a great golf teacher, and the vast majority of students recognize this.
The overriding factor is the love of the game. Golf teachers devote their careers to helping others while putting their own playing aspirations on the backburner. It has been said more than once by a teacher that they get more enjoyment out of their students' good shots than their own.
Finally, golf teachers are so much more than instructors of the game. They are friends, counselors, mentors, advisors, and entertainers. The responsibility of being a golf teacher goes beyond the mere mechanics of hitting a ball with a stick. Those who take on this responsibility are individuals who truly are interested in not only the well-being of this great game, but of others.
